Charity Rider, Bob Montgomery, Welcomed in Lithgow

At 71 years young Bob Montgomery is about to set off on his final stages of a solo 4,000km bike ride from Perth to Sydney to raise funds for Motor Neurone Disease.

On September 14th this year, semi-retired business person, cyclist and Rotarian, Bob Montgomery embarked on a solo charity bike ride from Perth to Sydney. This is a distance of over 4,100km with all money raised going towards raising awareness and research funds for Motor Neurone Disease. This is also Bob’s second charity ride for MND. In 2013 he rode from the Blue Mountains to Port Douglas raising over $35,000 for MND.

Bob’s decision to support MND is based on the fact that he has known several young people diagnosed with this fatal disease over the last few years and was personally touched when his cousin Judith was struck down with MND in February 2013. Unfortunately Judith died on Christmas Day 2013 just one week before he completed his Ride to the Reef.

Motor neurone disease (MND) is the name given to a group of diseases in which the nerve cells (neurones) controlling the muscles that enable us to move, speak, breathe and swallow undergo degeneration and die. Obviously people with MND can have their ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathing affected.

“I certainly take my hat off to Bob Montgomery for this huge effort” said Lithgow City Council Deputy Mayor, Councillor Ray Thompson “riding his bike over 4,000kms from Perth to Sydney is a great feat in its own right but to be doing to raise money for MND is remarkable. Bob is certainly one wonderful person and a hero.”

“As I understand it more than two Australians a day die from this terrible disease and funding is desperately needed for research” said Councillor Thompson.

“This is a great cause and I would like to encourage people to get behind it and support it” concluded Councillor Thompson.
