Mayors Christmas Appeal

With Christmas being the season of goodwill to all, Mayor Stephen Lesslie is inviting residents of the Lithgow area to donate a gift to the annual Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.

Each year, Council works closely with the staff and volunteers at our local nursing homes; Tanderra, Cooinda, Three Tree Lodge and Tabulam to develop the Christmas Appeal.

Many of our elderly residents living in nursing homes are incapacitated and unable to attend family functions to celebrate the festive season or do not have family members living nearby.

The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal has been developed to show appreciation to the residents of our aged care facilities for their contributions to the community.  These people have given so much to their friends, families and the broader community throughout their lives.  So let’s give back to them with a little gift that says thankyou.

What are the most suitable gifts to donate?

Although any gift given from the heart is wonderful, the nursing home staff and volunteers suggest that consideration be given to ensuring that gifts are non-allergenic or provide visual and sensory stimulus, particularly for Alzheimer’s patients.

Their suggested wish list of gifts includes:

  • Non-allergenic hand and nail care kits which include items such as emery boards, nail polish, nail clippers etc.
  • Soft lollies
  • Chocolates and candies that do not have peanuts or nut products in them.
  • Bright tactile and textured objects such as balls.
  • Bright soft toys
  • Tissues
  • Non-allergenic personal hygiene products
  • CD’s and DVD’s of old classics.
  • Crocheted or knitted knee rugs

How to donate

Donations may be dropped off at Council’s Administration Building or any one of Council’s libraries by close of business on the 24th November. Please do not wrap as this will be done by Council staff who are assisting the Mayor to distributed the gifts in order to ensure that the correct type of gift is given to patients requiring more tactile and sensory gifts.

If more gifts are received than required for distribution to the Nursing Homes, they will be donated to one of the other local charity Christmas Appeals for distribution to members of the community in need at Christmas.
