Eskbank House and Museum Seeking Volunteers

The team at Eskbank House is seeking new volunteers to assist with tour guiding, events, art exhibiting and to undertake conservation, cataloguing and research projects.

“Eskbank House is always a welcoming and fascinating place to visit which is a credit to the enthusiasm and abilities of the volunteers who work there.  As well as helping the community, working at the museum is a great way to learn new skills and make new friendships,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Maree Statham.

Built in 1842 by Alexander Binning for Thomas Brown, Eskbank House has been at the heart of Lithgow’s history, including the mining and iron industries, for most of its life. In 1966 it was opened as one of the first house museums in NSW. Now managed by Lithgow City Council, the site contains a museum and art gallery and hosts events in its picturesque gardens.

The museum is operated by volunteers managed by the Council’s Cultural Development Officer. As exhibitions, events and museum projects grow, the team is finding it needs more members. Volunteers need to have basic administration, record keeping, computing and office skills, customer service skills and be able to work in a team. Additional skills that will help include research skills, advanced computing skills, exhibition curating, public speaking and museum conservation skills. Team members volunteer a minimum of one day a week between Wednesday and Sunday from 9.00am to 4.00pm, but are welcome to do more.

As well as on the job training, Council supports volunteers with outside training opportunities.
