Give Happy, Live Happy: Thank a Volunteer Day 2015

Did you know that more than six million Australian people volunteer their time and effort each year and in Lithgow alone there are about 3,500 volunteers who give their time and contribute to creating a healthy, vibrant and harmonious community?

Research shows that the altruistic emotions and behaviours associated with volunteering contribute to greater well-being, health and longevity. Volunteers are not only happier and healthier, but they also sleep better than those who don’t volunteer – doctors should recommend it!

“According to official statistics, more than six million Australians volunteer in some way,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Maree Statham. “What they achieve is worth more than $14 billion in economic terms. If this is applied to the number of volunteers in the Lithgow area, they save our local economy more than $8 million per year – and much more than that in individual, social and community benefit”.

To acknowledge this monumental contribution, Lithgow City Council will be hosting a recognition event to thank all people who volunteer in the Lithgow LGA.

The event will take at Eskbank House Museum, corner of Inch and Bennett Streets Lithgow, from 4.00pm-6.00pm on Friday 15 May 2015. As part of this celebration there will be speeches, entertainment and a generous afternoon tea.
