Hey Tosser – Litter Prevention!

The Lithgow Litter Prevention Program uses the creative statement “Hey Tosser” as a personal message that speaks directly to people who litter.

Lithgow Council has received funding from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to carry out a litter prevention program across the Local Government Area.  The Lithgow Litter Prevention Program aims to achieve the EPA target of a 40% reduction in littered items across various sites within the LGA. The program will involve education to raise community awareness, new infrastructure and increased enforcement at selected locations or “hot spots”.

“The accumulation of cigarette butts, littering at roadside stops and the associated bushfire risks are of particular concern” says Lithgow City Council Mayor, Councillor Maree Statham.

A litter education program is being presented to participating primary schools and an advertising campaign is occurring via local media. New infrastructure has been installed such as waste bins, recycling bins and butt bins. Accompanying signage is also installed in all ‘hot spot’ locations making it easier for people to do the right thing and feel positive about the sites.

“Through raising community awareness and education about litter, we aim to encourage people to dispose of their litter appropriately and responsibly. To become involved, individuals can also register for a Cleanup Australia Day activity (1st March 2015) in your local area and report littering from vehicles to the EPA” added Mayor Statham.

Businesses who pledge their support to prevent littering by registering with Council, will receive “Hey Tosser” promotional material for customers and also have their business name printed in a weekly litter prevention newspaper. The advertisement will run throughout February 2015, at no cost to local businesses.
