A number of local museums and community support organisations recently attended the first meeting of the Lithgow Volunteering Network which aims to assist organisations that work with or are run by volunteers and to promote volunteering in our community.
One suggestion that received considerable attention at the meeting was the use of the “Go Volunteer” system to advertise volunteer positions within organisations. “Go Volunteer is Australia’s single national source of volunteering opportunities for volunteers and volunteering organisations. It is a free service designed to make volunteering easier by bringing volunteers and volunteering organisations together,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Maree Statham. “I would encourage all volunteering organisations to use this simple and effective system as a strategy for attracting and recruiting volunteers”.
Chairperson of the Lithgow Volunteering Network, Amy Raveneau said, “Organisations registered with “Go Volunteer” can enter the details of volunteer opportunities into their account. These opportunities are then posted to the national volunteering database and shared on a network of highly frequented websites, such as GoVolunteer.com.au and SEEK Volunteer, which maximizes the chances of being seen by potential volunteers”.
To see if your organisation is eligible to have volunteer opportunities posted on “Go Volunteer” please review the guidelines at http://govolunteer.com.au/About-Volunteering/Volunteering-Guidelines.
In addition to using the “Go Volunteer” system, members of the Lithgow Volunteering Network will have the opportunity to share professional advice, gain information, make new connections and participate in professional development sessions including guest speakers and workshops. The next meeting of the network is on Wednesday 18 November from 12.00pm-1.00pm at the Lithgow Information and Neighbourhood Centre, 1 Padley Street Lithgow. If you are part of a volunteering organisation and wish to join the network or attend the next meeting, please contact Council’s Community Development Officer Viktoria Gulabovski on 6354 9999 or email Viktoria.email@example.com.
Working together to support, celebrate and grow volunteering in our community forms part of Councils Caring for our Community strategies in the Community Strategic Plan 2026.
