LJ Hooker Reg Cowden Memorial Sports Star of the Year Awards – February, May & June 2015 Winners

The winners of the LJ Hooker Reg Cowden Memorial Sports Star of the Year Awards for the months of February, May & June 2015 have been announced by Lithgow City Council.

The Junior Award for February 2015

This award was won by Kallan Phillips (Basketball).

Lithgow’s Kallan Phillips is the proud owner of a shiny new gold medal after competing in the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup. Kallan was selected in the NSW Ospreys under 14 Country side. It was a top tournament for Kallan whose side went through undefeated beating South Australia Magpies, New Zealand Kea, NSW Waratahs, Tasmania Rosellas and Victoria Goldmines along the way putting them into the final. In the final they were up against the strong South Australia side with the two teams battling out a thriller. There was nothing between the two sides but it was the Ospreys that held their nerve to edge out South Australia 59-56 to take the title and the gold medal. Kallan was one of the stars throughout the Ospreys’ campaign with her strong defense gaining her side valuable possession with her steals and continually putting pressure on the opposition attack. Her shooting was also on target scoring an average of over eight points a game.

The Junior Award for May 2015

This award was won by Kellie Poppett & Mikayla Newcombe  (Martial Arts).

The students from Kumiai-Ryu Martial Arts Lithgow recently travelled to Sydney to compete in the Australian Kung Fu Wushu Championships, returning with spectacular results. All students competed in the Sanda events, winning seven Australian titles, seven gold medals and two silver medals. All competitors competed in they own weight divisions as well as combination divisions. Combinations divisions are when two neighbouring weight divisions are combined. The achievements for the team were: Kellie Poppett two gold medals, Mikayla Newcombe one gold and one silver medal, Shane Power a gold medal, Jason Russell a gold and one Silver medal and Perrin Walsh two gold medals. A special mention goes to Mikayla Newcombe who found herself up against the current Australian Sanda champion who only last year had competed at the Junior Olympics in China in a demonstration Sanda event. Her opponent was the only one to gain selection from Australia. Mikayla did an outstanding job and showed plenty of spirit and came away with a silver medal. Another high point was that Mahala Williams was named in the Australian full contact Wushu Sanda team and will be travelling to the world championships in Jakarta in Indonesia in November.
