LJ Hooker Reg Cowden Memorial Sports Star of the Year Awards – October & November 2015 Winners

The winners of the LJ Hooker Reg Cowden Memorial Sports Star of the Year Awards for the months of October & November 2015 have been announced by Lithgow City Council.

Mayor of Lithgow, Councillor Maree Statham announced Morgan Watts as the winner of the Junior Award for October 2015.

On 18th October 2015 Morgan competed in the Boomers Triathlon Race at Bathurst. Morgan has been working with the Lithgow Swim Squad and was first girl out of the pool, she had a nice transition to the bike and had a strong ride to transition well into the run where she was strong all the way to the finish line and first female home.

The Senior Award for October 2015 was won by Cheryl Rutherford (Hockey).

Cheryl returned home from the Women’s Masters Australian Hockey Championships held in Brisbane, bringing home a gold medal and being named in the Australian Over 55 Masters Team to contest the World Cup in Canberra in March 2016. Cheryl was named in the Australian O/55 Masters Team at the closing ceremony.

The Junior Award for November 2015 was won by Alysha Connor (Physical Culture).

Alysha represented Lithgow in the 10 year old section at Sydney Zone competitions held in October. She was selected to progress to the State Final and made the final 12 who competed at Sydney Town Hall in the State Grand Final on 30th November. Alysha was placed 2nd – State Runner Up.

The Senior Award for November 2015 was won by Rene Hunter & Andrea Gillard (Hockey).

Rene and Andrea travelled to Argentina with the Australian under 21 Jillaroos for a six match series. Each of the tests were extremely close with the Jillaroos going down in two, drawing two and winning two with the honours finishing up even between the two countries. The Jillaroos side is regarded as one of the stepping stones for young players on their way to Hockeyroo selection.

“Council extends its congratulations to Morgan, Cheryl, Alysha, Rene & Andrea on their achievements, and further encourages the community and local sporting organisations to submit nominations for these awards” concluded Mayor Statham.

Nominations for outstanding sporting achievements in December 2015 & January 2016 will be accepted by Lithgow City Council until 7th February 2016.
