National Volunteer Week – Give a Little. Change a Lot.

The theme for National Volunteer Week this year is ‘Give a little. Change a lot’, representing the millions of volunteers who make a profound impact in their communities and on society. Through giving a little time they make a big difference.

There are an amazing 3.6 million volunteers across Australia and over 3,500 volunteers in Lithgow. The social value of volunteering cannot be denied. Volunteering is a form of civic participation that creates bridging networks and strengthens communities.

Using a valuation method based on a notional hourly wage rate, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) estimated that in 2006-2007, the economic contribution of volunteers was over $14 billion of unpaid labour. A revised national figure for the economic contribution of volunteers is yet to be released (Volunteeringaustralia.org, 2018).

If this formula is applied to the number of volunteers in the Lithgow area, it can be estimated that our volunteers save our local economy more than $8 million per year – and much more than that in individual, social and community benefit.

“Our volunteers take on many roles and assist a number of organisations,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Cr Stephen Lesslie. “The number of hours and the level of energy that these volunteers invest into our community is admirable. It will be my pleasure to thank them at our upcoming celebration for freely giving their time to making our city the wonderful place that it is”.

To mark National Volunteer Week and thank our wonderful volunteers, Lithgow City Council will be hosting a volunteer’s celebration at Lithgow Workies on Friday 25 May 2018 from 4.30pm-6.00pm. There will be speeches, food and drinks, and entertainment will also be provided by the students of the Mitchell Conservatorium.
