Portland and Wallerawang Skate Park Openings

The recently completed Portland and Wallerawang skate parks are set to have their official opening Saturday the 23rd of November. Families are invited to head to one or both sites, where there will be music, skating, demo’s and learning.

Portland’s opening will kick off first and commence at 9am with Portland Central School serving up brekky and treats; as well as providing face painting. Totem skate boarding will start the party with a skate, scoot and bmx demo, followed by a beginner lesson and skate jam comp with prizes. The festivities will be rounded out with the official opening by MP Paul Toole at 11am.

From there, the party will move to Wallerawang with MP Paul Toole opening the park at 12:30pm; followed by skate, scoot and bmx demo, intermediate lesson and a skate jam comp with prizes. There will be a sausage sizzle on-site but families are encouraged to bring a picnic and shade to the Wallerawang opening that will finish at approximately 4pm.

“This is going to be a great day for families full of fun and festivities.  I’m looking forward to seeing the demo’s and lessons, watching our young ones learning new skills and confidence at their local park” said Community Development Officer Kristy Lenon.

The modern design of the new concrete skate parks is in stark contrast to the old modular steel facilities they replaced – a welcome improvement for both towns. They are in close proximity to each other but have a diverse range of features to cater for all interests.

“It’s been delightful to see the number of children and young people regularly at the skate parks, getting active and refining their skills. It’s pleasing to see that they have a place to socialise and connect as well as promote health and physical activity.” said Mayor Ray Thompson.

Both the Portland and Wallerawang skate parks received funding from Lithgow City Council and the NSW Stronger Country Communities Fund.
