Refugee Week @ Lithgow Library

Refugee Week 2017 from 18-24th June is a time when Australia celebrates the contribution of those who have come to Australia as refugees and people seeking asylum.

“Like the rest of our country, Lithgow has benefitted and grown from the contributions of refugees and people seeking asylum who come and make a new home here in our community,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Stephen Lesslie. “Refugee Week is an opportunity to learn more about the stories of our refugee community and to understand the lives and struggles and joy of some of our newest Australians”

Throughout Refugee Week, in the community space at Lithgow Library, there will be a screening of a film by Amnesty International – Freedom Stories.  “Freedom Stories explores the achievements and stories of former ‘boat people’ who arrived in Australian waters seeking asylum from the Middle East around 2001. Now Australian citizens, they are finally building secure lives and contributing to their new country.”  This film will be playing on a loop all week so you can drop in to the library and watch all or part of it at a time that suits you.

On Tuesday 20th of June there will be a special event screening of the film Cast From the Storm, an uplifting documentary that tells the tender story of a group of teenage refugees who share their extraordinary stories when they join Treehouse Theatre, an after-school theatre group. A coming of age story that shares the reality of what it means to be a teenager and a displaced person. This is the story of what comes after, and what it means to remake your home. This event will be at 4:00pm in the Library’s community space. Popcorn will be on hand.

There will also be an art exhibition during the month of June that has been organised by the local LASAR Action Group (Lithgow Asylum seeker and refugee Support Group).

These events are all free at Lithgow Library – no bookings are required and everyone is welcome to attend.
