Council Supports Ban to Prevent the Release of Balloons

The release of balloons will be prohibited at all Council events and in Council reserves

Lithgow City Council resolved at the Council meeting on the 10th April 2017 to support Eurobodalla Shire Council’s ban on the release of balloons at Council events or on Council managed reserves. Mayor, Stephen Lesslie said “Council supports the ban on releasing balloons, we must think about the effects our actions have on our natural environment.”

Unfortunately balloons can cause significant harm to the natural environment. Although some balloons are made from natural latex and are marketed as an environmentally friendly option, these will still take months to break down and are known to harm and kill animals in the natural environment. The attached strings and clips on balloons will last much longer in the environment and go on to be eaten or entangle in native species.
