Disposing of items in the right way is essential to safely manage and reduce our waste.

National Recycling week is a good time to check that we know where our waste should go.

The yellow-lid recycling bin can take some of our common packaging items for recycling, such as:

  • Aluminium and steel cans,
  • Cardboard,
  • Paper,
  • Hard plastic bottles and containers, and
  • Glass bottles and jars.

It is important that other items, such as soft plastic bags and shredded paper, are not put into the recycling bin. There can be serious consequences, including damage to equipment, injuries to staff and fires in facilities, when the wrong things are put into kerbside bins.

The Community Recycling Centre, located at the Lithgow Solid Waste Facility, is the right place for the following problem waste items that can never go into any of the kerbside bins:

  • Aerosols,
  • Batteries (car and household),
  • Fire extinguishers,
  • Fluorescent light globes and tubes,
  • Gas bottles,
  • Motor and other oils,
  • Paint, and
  • Smoke detectors.

The Resource Recovery Centre is also located at the Lithgow Solid Waste Facility and collects clothing, polystyrene foam and large pieces of cardboard for recycling. Tyres, mattresses and fridges are only accepted at the Resource Recovery Centre as these items are also recycled. There is also a Reuse Shed, so that items in good condition can be donated for others to use.

The Resource Recovery Centre has the same opening times as the Lithgow Solid Waste Facility. The site is open 7 days a week, from 8am – 4.45pm, all year except for Good Friday and Christmas day.

The facility is open to all residents. Please bring proof of residence such as your driver licence or rates notice. When you enter the Lithgow Solid Waste Facility, there are traffic lights before the weighbridge. Please follow the traffic signals and, once on the weighbridge, stop at the intercom to talk to the staff who will guide you.

Let’s get the right things in the yellow bin, Community Recycling Centre and Resource Recovery Centre to preserve landfill capacity, protect our environment and return resources to productive instead of being wasted in landfill.
