WASTE 2 ART have announced their theme for 2024 is PACKAGING. Christmas is the perfect time to start collecting your materials. So instead of throwing away all that wrapping paper and boxes, stash them away for your WASTE 2 ART project.

WASTE 2 ART is a Regional NSW community art exhibition and competition open to all residents of the NetWaste region, of which Lithgow is a part. It showcases creative works made from reused waste materials. The aim is to challenge peoples’ perceptions about ‘rubbish’ and to celebrate the reuse and recycling of waste through arts and crafts.

Waste 2 Art provides an innovative approach to waste education, inviting individuals, schools, and community groups to take up the challenge and create a new life for materials that would otherwise have been thrown away or considered useless. Over the years many materials have been used, items like soft plastics, tin cans, bottle tops, plastic bags, parts from rusty farm machinery, scrap metal, bread tags, the options are limitless. Instead of ending up in landfill, these waste materials can be turned into fantastic works of art.

The competition will include categories to challenge and stimulate the imagination. This competition gives aspiring and professional artists the chance to explore and share their “waste reduction message”.  It also provides a wonderful opportunity for the entire Lithgow community to showcase their creativity.

Each year, a specific waste item is featured in an attempt to highlight problem issues, and this year is the Year of Packaging.

Entries for the local competition will open in March and close in May 2024. This will be advertised on Council’s website closer to the date.

Entry forms for Waste to Art are available for download from the NetWaste website www.netwaste.com.au.
