Low-risk traces of asbestos have been found in the fill material used surrounding Stewart Street Park and Zig Zag Oval at Oakey Park. It has also been found in a Council stockpile site which is not in a public area.

Inspections have occurred to evaluate the areas affected and determine the level of associated risk.

The following measures are underway to contain the sites and resolve this matter:

  1. All sites have been barricaded and covered with plastic and sand to contain the contaminated material. The sites will continue to be watered to stop dust from spreading.

      2. A specialist contractor will be onsite from Friday 29th of November to assess the sites to begin the process of removing the contaminated material from both parks.

The Council asks that residents avoid the areas and follow the directions on all signage around the sites for their own health and safety. Both parks will be reopened as soon as practicable.
