State Significant Developments
State Significant Developments in the Lithgow Local Government Area
Certain large-scale developments within the Lithgow Local Government Area are classified as State Significant Development (SSD) due to their size, economic value, or potential environmental impact. These projects are assessed and determined by the NSW Government—not Lithgow City Council.
While Council is not the consenting authority for SSDs, it plays an important role by reviewing applications and providing submissions based on local knowledge, community impact, and planning considerations. Community members are also encouraged to have their say during public exhibition periods, ensuring local voices are heard in the decision-making process.
Wind Farms
There are currently three wind farm projects proposed for development in the Lithgow Local Government area; Sunny Corner Wind Farm, Mount Lambie Wind Farm and Ben Bullen Wind Farm.
Each of these projects is State Significant Development. Lithgow City Council is not the consenting authority for these developments. The Council, like members of the community, can make a submission on State Significant Development applications taking into consideration local knowledge and considerations.
The Lithgow Local Government Area is on the precipice of a changing economy as we transition from coal mining and coal fired power generation. The area could still play an important role in power generation and attract new investment by harnessing existing high-voltage power transmission infrastructure.
Council is inviting community feedback on the three wind farm proposals to inform the Council’s position on the proposals and to assist in preparing Council’s responses to the NSW Government. We want to hear your concerns or opinions regarding the proposed wind farm developments. But equally important we want to hear from those who support the proposed developments and why?
What will happen to my feedback?
All feedback will:
- Be forwarded to Someva Renewables (Sunny Corner Wind Farm) and/or Alinta Energy (Mount Lambie Wind Farm and Ben Bullen Wind Farm) for information and consideration as they progress their applications.
- The feedback will be taken into consideration by the Council when making submissions to the NSW Government on the Environmental Impact Statements and Planning Applications for these State Significant Developments.
