Capertee Waste Transfer Station
The Capertee Garbage Depot in Hearne Street, Capertee, will be replaced by a Waste Transfer Station.
The Capertee Waste Transfer Station located in Hearne Street, at the front of the existing landfill site. will start operating from Monday, 24 November, 2025.
This is an interim measure while a long-term option is decided.
The Waste Transfer Station will consist of:
- The ‘Green Recycling’ skip bin and the ‘Metal Recycling’ skip bin are taken to the Lithgow Solid Waste Facility for the materials to be recycled.
- The ‘Domestic Waste’ skip bin is taken to the Lithgow Solid Waste Facility for waste disposal.
- The materials in the yellow-lid garbage bins and yellow-lid cardboard mini skip bin are taken to a Materials Recycling Facility for recycling.
What is a Waste Transfer Station?
A Waste Transfer Station is a facility for residents, who do not have a kerbside bin collection service, to dispose of the same type and quantity of domestic waste that could go into kerbside bins.
A Waste Transfer Station provides bins into which residents can sort their waste and recyclables.
Who can use a Waste Transfer Station?
Rural waste facilities are only for the use of local rural residents to dispose of domestic waste, which is the waste generated through normal day-to-day activities in their home.
- Waste from businesses, industry and other commercial enterprises, including farms and tourist accommodation, is not accepted at rural waste facilities and must be taken to the Lithgow Solid Waste Facility.
- Waste from outside of the Lithgow Local Government Area is also prohibited.
- Use of the Waste Transfer Station is only permitted in accordance with the signs at the entrance. Please observe all the signs when using the Waste Transfer Station.
What IS accepted at the Waste Transfer Station?
The Waste Transfer Station only accepts domestic waste from residents of the type and quantity of waste that would go into the kerbside bins.
Items accepted in the DOMESTIC WASTE skip bin:
- Non-recyclable packaging (such as soft plastic bags and wrapping)
- Broken glass and crockery
- Disposable nappies and other sanitary items
- Textiles, shoes and bags
The skip bin for domestic waste accepts the same types and quantities of waste that could go into a red-lid kerbside bin.
Items accepted in the YELLOW-LID RECYCLING garbage bins:
- Paper and cardboard,
- Aluminium and steel cans,
- Glass jars and bottles, and
- Plastic bottles and rigid plastic containers (such as ice cream containers)
Items accepted in the yellow-lid CARDBOARD mini skip bin:
- Clean, flattened cardboard boxes
Items accepted in the GREEN RECYCLING skip bin:
- Plant material (no plastic, including bags or string made with plastic, can go into the green waste bin)
Items accepted in the METAL RECYCLING skip bin:
- Metal (no fridges or freezers)
What IS NOT accepted at the Waste Transfer Station:
Asbestos
- Asbestos is only accepted at the Lithgow Solid Waste Facility in compliance with all State government regulations and Council’s asbestos procedure. Please see the information on Council’s website for Council’s asbestos procedure and contact Council on 6354 9999 to book asbestos disposal.
Batteries
- Batteries are not accepted in any bins, skip bins or landfills. Batteries must be taken to a drop-off point or the Community Recycling Centre. Please see Council’s ‘battery disposal guide’ on the website for further information.
Bulky waste including household furniture
- Furniture, sports equipment and other bulky items that do not go into the kerbside bins are not accepted at Waste Transfer Stations.
- Items can be taken to the Lithgow Solid Waste Facility and items in good condition can be put in the collection area for the Reuse Shed.
Commercial waste
- Commercial waste is only accepted at the Lithgow Solid Waste Facility. Fees apply.
Construction and Demolition waste
- Construction and Demolition waste is only accepted at the Lithgow Solid Waste Facility. Fees apply.
Electrical items (E-Waste)
- E-waste, including TVs and computers, is only accepted at the Lithgow Solid Waste Facility where it is collected for recycling.
Hazardous and liquid waste
- Hazardous waste and liquid wastes are prohibited at all landfills and waste transfer stations.
The following items must be taken to the Community Recycling Centre at the Lithgow Solid Waste Facility for safe recycling and disposal:
- Aerosols,
- Batteries (Car and household batteries),
- Fire extinguishers,
- Fluorescent globes and tubes,
- Gas bottles,
- Motor and other oils,
- Paint
- Smoke detectors.
Mattresses
- Mattresses are only accepted at the Lithgow Solid Waste Facility. Fees apply.
Tyres
- Tyres are only accepted at the Lithgow Solid Waste Facility. Fees apply.
White Goods
- White goods such as refrigerators and freezers are only accepted at the Lithgow Solid Waste Facility.
Is the Waste Transfer Station monitored?
Back to base security cameras are monitored to identify any non-compliance with the sign at the entrance of the facility.
