Australia Day

Australia Day

Australia Day is a day to reflect, respect and celebrate the Australian spirit.

We use the day to highlight the best of this country including:

  • Australia’s First Peoples, Aboriginal culture and heritage
  • our mateship
  • our sense of community
  • our resilience
  • lifestyle, culture, and people from all walks of life
  • our cultural diversity and rich migrant heritage
  • our optimism and hope as we look to the future.

Australia Day  is celebrated with events in Lithgow, Wallerawang and Portland.

The Official Australia Day Ceremony for 2025 at Queen Elizabeth Park will commence at 9:00am with the Civic Ceremony, followed by a community fair until 1:00pm.

NSW Local Citizenship Awards

Every year  members of our community are recognised through the NSW Local Citizenship Awards these awards highlight outstanding residents across a range of categories including:

Citizen of the Year

The Citizen of the Year Award acknowledges people who through their efforts and commitment have made our community a better place.

Volunteer of the Year

The Volunteer of the Year Award acknowledges people who have given their time freely to help the community within the Lithgow LGA. Nominees for the Young Volunteer and Young Citizen Categories must be aged 16 to 25 years on 26 January of the year of nomination, while the Open Categories are for people aged 26 years and over on 26 January of the year of nomination.  

New Resident Award

The New Resident Award acknowledges the initiative and contribution of a new resident (less than 2 years in Lithgow) to the area. 

Heritage Conservation/ Environmental Achievement Award

The Heritage Conservation/ Environmental Achievement Award is for an individual or an organisation that has made significant contribution to the preservation of the heritage or protection/enhancement of the environment of the Lithgow LGA.

Service to the Community Award (Organisation) 

The Service to the Community Award (Organisation) is for organisations which aim to enrich the lives of the people in the Lithgow LGA.  This organisation does not have to be a volunteer organisation. 

Outstanding Event Award 

The Outstanding Event Award recognises the significant contribution that special events make to our region.

How can I nominate:

Nominations for NSW Local Citizenship Awards will be received from the second Monday in November until C.O.B the Second Friday in December after which time the judging period will be undertaken between December and January.

Winners of all awards will be announced on Australia Day at the Official Australia Day Ceremony to be held in Lithgow (details will be provided).
